Plainfield’s Methodist Churches Come Together to “Change the World”
The Sharon Methodist Church and the Plainfield United Methodist Church joined forces on May 14th to participate in the international service project: Change the World. The project, created by United Methodist Communications, began last year with an estimated 100,000 participants serving at 1,000 sites.
Sunday after Sunday people come to church for worship. Change the World is special because it takes our congregations out of the pews and into action within the community. This international event calls us to take Church into the world and demonstrate God’s love in our communities.

Our Plainfield congregations created 23 teams of volunteers participating at 24 different locations throughout the area. The teams included people of all ages—toddlers and adults alike! Projects this year included a blood drive, music and crafts with residents at Cedar Lake Village, landscaping, painting, cleaning, library material preparation, a shoe drive for Share Your Soles, writing over 50 letters to homebound community members, and making 28 fleece blankets for Lamb’s Fold.
Each of these projects directly affected members of the Plainfield community. Service projects like the shoe drive for Share Your Soles reach out into the greater international community as well with their last shipment of shoes sent to the still earthquake devastated Haiti.
In 2011, Change the World focused around a sermon series titled: Be. Go. Do. These events ask us to rethink Church, get out into the community and act on Jesus’ call to us to love thy neighbor. While some of the projects were hard work, the members of Plainfield’s Methodist congregations were excited to put our faith into action to serve and had a ball doing it!
